Challenges for Anti Aging Foods

The secrets of longevity of the Mediterranean Diet
In the 60s a study was conducted in eight different countries or regions to compare the rates of coronary heart disease (related to the deterioration of the coronary arteries).
The results of this study showed that the Mediterranean countries and in particular the island of Crete in Greece had rates significantly lower. In observing the habits of this region that scientists have made the connection between nutrient intakes and risk of diseases related to aging in general. The Cretan adopt an extremely healthy diet balanced and healthy life brings them from generation to generation for centuries.

Our health and longevity are directly related to how our food
Throughout the life foods provide the body what it needs to develop during growth, to maintain good “work” during adulthood and finally to stay in shape and limit risks of certain diseases when the old approach.
Industrialized countries have gradually adopted the habits of manufacture, storage and consumption of foods that create imbalances, cause many disorders and diseases called degenerative (age-related). Add to that pollution, smoking, stress, sun exposure and lack of physical activity and we are witnessing a significant increase in these diseases. Today we know the mechanisms that come into play at the cellular level, in the process of degradation. We also know the substances, micro nutrients that act to prevent the ill effects of aging.

What are the characteristics of the Mediterranean diet?
- It is low in calories, it is known that a diet too rich is bad for the line but also for health.
- It gives an important place in plant foods, fruits and vegetables are present at every meal, without moderation.
- Cereals such as wheat and barley are also consumed daily.
- We eat little meat preference for crustaceans, fish.
- Vegetable oils complement each meal, such as linseed oil, castor oil and especially olive.
- Wine is consumed in moderation.

What are the dangers of imbalance in food?
Returning to the cell. It is the basic element of the human body, bones, skin, organs, muscles are made of cells. When we get older or we’re sick, it is above all our cells that are in bad condition!
In the heart cells that chemical reactions take place to transform nutrients into living matter or energy. For chemistry occurs, the cell membrane (thin film that surrounds each cell) must be both flexible and permeable to ensure exchange of materials.

Free Radicals
Free radicals are the enemies of the cell membrane. The body naturally produces waste, free radicals. These highly reactive substances attack the cell membrane make it rigid and impermeable. This is called oxidative stress. These free radicals are also produced in excess due to sun exposure, smoking, pollution and stress in general. The body’s natural defenses are overwhelmed and then the risks increase.
A daily diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides the necessary micro nutrients antioxidants to fight free radicals.

Saturated Fats
Other opponents of the cell membrane are saturated fats. They are found in fatty foods of animal origin (meat fat, butter, sausage) and their overuse causes vascular risk. Their structure does not allow them to integrate the cell membrane and they will build up on artery walls.
Again the Mediterranean diet shows its effectiveness. The low consumption of saturated fats and preference for vegetable oil and fish rich in essential fatty acids (unsaturated), can maintain the qualities of the cell membrane.
